Digital literacy: A new literacy in need of a new curriculum and its research implications

The Institute of International Studies, Ramkhamhaeng University (IIS-RU) organized an academic talk title “Digital literacy: A new literacy in need of a new curriculum and its research implications”, which was held  on Thursday 8 November, 2018 during 09.30 am – 12.30 pm at the Lecture Room, 7th Floor, Institute of International Studies, Printing Press. The aim of the academic talk was two-fold. Firstly, it aimed towards offering a platform for faculty members to have a chance to exchange their views and discuss on the new theory as “digital literacy or media literacy” in order to apply or implement obtained knowledge to foreign language learning and teaching, curriculum development, and research implication. Secondly, it attempted to encourage internal faculty members’ potentials to be able to conduct research in their fields of study and be able to publish academic works in journals both nationally and internationally.

The event was attended by 40 participants, including curriculum lecturers for Bachelor of Arts in English (International Program) of IIS-RU together with lecturers from the Faculties of Humanities, Education, and Mass Communication. The guest speaker of this academic talk was Asst. Prof. Dr. Richard Vogel, Department of Media Communications, Lincoln Memorial University, USA. Additionally, the Fulbright scholarship was awarded to Asst. Prof. Dr. Richard Vogel to design a curriculum for Bangkok K-12 educators to facilitate them teaching digital literacy and incorporating those skills into classes in a range of disciplines. Asst. Prof. Dr. Richard Vogel has been a writer, producer and director of a range of videos as has taught media communication, speech communication and general communication courses for over 30 years.
